Born and raised in Italy in the early 1900s, Pier Giorgio's father was a newspaper owner and Italian diplomat to Germany. Pier Giorgio spent his life giving care and support to the poor around him before dying in 1925 from poliomyelitis. His funeral attracted thousands of supporters and mourners.
